No one is good except God alone (Mark 10:18; Luke 18:19).
There is One who is good” (Matt. 19:17).
There is no genuine, absolute “good” apart from God. “Good” exists exclusively in God. “Good” can only be defined by the character of God’s goodness.
God’s goodness is expressible in human behaviour, only as the character of God is dynamically generated and actuated by God’s grace. Only God can actively express His goodness. It is not a “commodity” to be distributed. It is not a moral pattern to be imitated. God’s goodness can be expressed within His creation in human behaviour, only by His own energizing, empowering and enabling – by His grace. The active expression of all genuine goodness in our behaviour is only derived from God.
“The one who does good is of God” (III John 11)
In other words, “the one who manifests goodness derives what he does out of God.” “Good” is do-able only as the character of God is activated in human behaviour by the grace of God.
Can anything or anyone else be said to be “good” in the same sense that God is good? No! We must not make ourself, another person, an object, an idea or an activity equivalent to God. This was the sin of Satan – ‘I will be like the most High”. We cannot be what only God Himself is.
