I have often heard Christians telling others that they must “repent”. The problem with telling someone to repent is this: Repentance is not “something” that we as humans just whimsically decide to do because someone tells us so. As new creations, everything we need for life and godliness has been given to us already – 2 Peter 1:3. God doesn’t ask or require anything from us that He Himself has not already provided in the Person of His Son Jesus Christ, for He shall provide all of our needs according to His riches and mercy BY CHRIST JESUSPhp 4:19.

With this statement in mind, let us look at 2 scriptures pertaining to the source of true repentance:

2Ti 2:25 KJV In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

Act 11:18 KJV When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

As new creations with Christ living in us as our life, we need to know that repentance is “something” that God gives us and it is not something generated or initiated in our own strength. It is a gift from God and this not of ourselves for it is grace from God – Gal 2:21. It is only He that opens the eyes of the understanding, and works conviction in the mind, so that we will know what He has freely given us in Christ – 1 Cor 2:12.

Repentance is a “grant” from God and it is not in the power of man’s free will. If we are not enabled through grace to repent, we cannot truly repent. This is why Paul said that the life he now lives he lives by the faith of the Son of God – Gal 2:20. He understood that Christ is everything to us – including repentance.

2Co 5:17 KJV Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

“Every area of your life, in which you have not learned to be dependent, is an area of your life in which you have not as yet repented.”
