Do you think that it is possible to commit spiritual adultery and be completely unaware that you are doing it? I propose that not only is it possible, but it is rife in the Church today. In my estimation, millions of Christians worldwide unawares are practising spiritual adulterers. How can I make such a shocking statement? Let me explain.

To understand spiritual adultery we must first look at what adultery is in the natural world. In the natural, adultery is committed when a married person has an extra-marital affair with another person. Adultery is also committed when a married person marries another person while they are still married to their spouse. The same definition applys to spiritual adultery.

Paul explains exactly what spiritual adultery is. Let us read the following verses of scripture:

Rom 7:1-6 KJV  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?  (2)  For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.  (3)  So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.  (4)  Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.  (5)  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.  (6)  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Do you see it? Paul is saying in essence that we are either married to the Law, or we are married to Christ. If we are married to Christ as new creation believers are, we cannot also be under the Law! The problem that so many believers have is that their spiritual teachers are preaching an ‘adulterous gospel”, and this corrupt message is accepted as truth, and it deceives it’s believers and adultery is committed. What is an “adulterous gospel” you may ask? An “adulterous gospel” is a gospel that preaches a mixture of Law and grace. Paul rebuked the Galatian Church for this in Galatians 1:6-12 & Galatians 2:4.

If we “bed hop” as it suits our cause, from Law and then to Christ Jesus, we are committing spiritual adultery. In Christ we have died to the Law, and we are now under Grace. We cannot have “relations” with both the Law and with grace because we have been betrothed to Jesus Christ!

This is gives me a better understanding of what happens when a seducing spirit comes to deceive many. And so some depart from the truth (Christ). Law and Grace cannot be together.

We are married to Christ and therefore we are one. A seducing spirit’s main aim is to lure us away from Christ and back to the law and works. Thus severing that oneness with Christ. It is then that we are having this adulterous affair!

1 Timothy 4:1,2 “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.” KJV

2 Timothy 4:3,4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

The law appeals to our flesh, because we feel good when we can say “I did this and this right and now I am holy.” This is the deception that the enemy wants us to fall into. He wants us to trust in our own strength.

Whereas in Christ it is He that makes us holy and it is He that enables us to do and to will.

Sarah and Hagar represent the two covenants..the old and the new. Hagar’s son was born the ordinary way (in Abrahams own strength) and Sarah’s son was born as a result of a promise. One was a slave woman (Hagar) and one was a free woman (Sarah). As the scripture says Galatians 4:30 “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son. THEREFORE BROTHERS (us), we are not children of the slave woman (law) but of the free woman (grace).”

Christ has set us free!!! Why is it then that we want to go back to slavery?
