No pain – No gain

Have you ever been hurt by someone close to you? Maybe a friend or family member? Maybe a church member or even a church pastor? The truth is that every one of us has been hurt and will be hurt in the future, it is part of being a human. We can’t change this fact. Although we can’t change that we will be hurt, we can come to know the Lord Jesus on a much deeper level through the pain and hurt. What we perceive as ‘’hurt,’’ actually brings life to us in a remarkable way.

Let me explain: For me personally, I was “hurt” by the ‘’church’’ and felt like God didn’t care because He allowed it and that He was a million miles away from me. During this very difficult time for my family and I, I was experiencing a mixed bouquet of painful emotions. For example, on one moment I would feel betrayed and the next humiliated, and so the rollercoaster continued for months on end. I wanted nothing to do with the ‘’church’ and with ‘’church’’ people. I was in a very bad place and felt completely abandoned.

In retrospect, I was blind to what the Lord was showing me, and was so ‘’hurt’’ that I couldn’t take instruction from the Lord at that very sensitive time. Then one very insignificant day, God showed me that the pain I was experiencing, was not my own:

2Co 4:7-11 KJV  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.  (8)  We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;  (9)  Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;  (10)  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.  (11)  For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

What I didn’t realize at the time, was that the pain that I was experiencing was not my pain! It was actually His pain that I was bearing. We read in verse 10 this: Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus.

Isaiah 63:9 KJV  In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

The lesson that I learned from the Lord only many months later was that the pain that I was experiencing was the Lords!! It was His pain that I was experiencing in my body. He is the Head and we are His body and whenever people say things or do things to us, they are doing it to Christ in us! This is why Jesus said this:

Mat 10:40 KJV  He that receiveth you receiveth me, …

What a powerful lesson this is? Maybe this is why Jesus tells us: Mat 11:28 KJV  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Why does God let us experience His Son’s death through pain? What is the purpose of suffering? We are told in verse 11: For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.

Christ in us – the hope of glory……..
