What is living a ‘good’ Christian life?

21 11 2011

I often hear someone saying something to this effect: “He lives such a good Christian life”. Let me ask you this question: What is a good Christian life? Is it when a person prays and reads his Bible diligently? It is when a person submits to his “spiritual leaders”? Or is it when a person pays his tithes faithfully? Is it when a person goes around feeding the poor and looking after orphans?

Doing things that constitute a “good Christian life”, puts pressure on believers to perform and makes them think that they need to live a ‘performing lifestyle’. It makes them falsely believe that there is a specific “lifestyle” or “way of doing things” as a good Christian, which promotes a works philosophy that Christians need to “do” and “be” good in order to be acceptable and  “successful” in God’s eyes.

Doing all these things is good to the religious mind, and will even soothe the guilty conscience, but doing these things is not living a good Christian life! Why do I say this?

Man-made religion has taught that we must do good and that we must have works in order to live a good Christian life and puts the focus of being good on the believer. This causes a mind-set of “superiority”. The truth of the matter is that God is not pleased with anything that we do in our own strength or ability. God doesn’t make our lives better, He gives us a completely new life – a life that is acceptable and pleasing to Him.

What life does He give us? He gives us the only life that has ever pleased Him. There has only ever been one life that Father God has ever been pleased with – it is the life of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 3:17 KJV  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The life of Jesus is the only life that is good and pleasing to God. God is not pleased by any man-effort and He depises any other life being lived besides the life of His Son Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 64:6 KJV  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags

This is why our old lives had to be done away with through the cross.

Galatians 2:20 KJV  I am crucified with Christ:

God gives us a new life – the life of His Son to live. We do not have a life of our own.

2 Corinthians 4:10 KJV  (10)  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

Christ living His life through us is pleasing to the Father. We are just the vessels that contain the life of Another. We are the branches and He is the Vine. We are the body and He is the Head. We are the bride and He is the Bridegroom.

In closing: A good Christian life is living the Life of Christ in us. It is His Life, and we manifest that life to the world around us. When He wants to give, we give. When He wants to pray, we pray. We are His body containing His life. In the words of Paul….

Galatians 2:20 …. nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: ….
