What is the power of God?

15 10 2011

This past week I was reading Matthew and this scripture ‘jumped out’ at me:

Mat 10:1-8 KJV  And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. ….  (8)  Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

I wondered why Jesus would give His disciples power to heal the sick and do amazing miracles, and then later on before He was crucified, He told them that they would be given power when the Holy Spirit was sent on the day of Pentecost? Why was it necessary to give them ‘power’ again? I realized that Jesus was talking about something different to what we have been taught in man-made religion. I was taught that the Holy Spirit gives us ‘power’ to do miracles. However, Jesus’ disciples did miracles before the day of Pentecost in Jesus’ Name. Not only did the 12 disciples do miracles, but in the following scripture, Jesus gave power to 70 other people to heal the sick and cast out demons.

Luk 10:1-20 KJV  After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.  …  (9)  And heal the sick that are therein, ….. …..  (17)  And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.  …..(19)  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: ….

These 70 healed the sick and did awesome miracles before the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus on Pentecost!

Then Jesus tells his disciples a something very interesting. He tells them to wait in Jerusalem for power!!!

Luk 24:49 KJV  And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

This raises a question: If the power that was going to be given them was power to do miracles, then why did the disciples need power if Jesus Himself had already given them power? They were already doing these things in the Name of Jesus.

Jesus was talking of something much deeper than we see or have been taught here. In John 14, Jesus tells His disciples about the day of Pentecost – when He would send the Holy Spirit to them.

Joh 14:16-20 KJV  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;  (17)  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.  (18)  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.  (19)  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.  (20)  At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

This scripture says that on the day of Pentecost, they will know something! Jesus does not say that on Pentecost, they would heal do miracles! Jesus said that they will know something! They would know that Christ is in us – just like Christ and God are One, we are one with Them because we have been joined to the Lord – 1 Cor 6:17. This is the reason for Pentecost. The purpose of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit was not to give power to heal the sick and to raise the dead, because this ‘power’ to do these things had already been given to the believers. In fact, even non-believers were doing miracles in the Name of Jesus! Mar 9:38-39 KJV  And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.  (39)  But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

So if Jesus wasn’t talking about healing and miracle working ‘power’ then what  ‘power’ was He speaking of? Let’s read this scripture again

The power Jesus was talking about was to give the believer a ‘knowing’. It says in verse 29 that we are to know something! To know Christ in us!!! To know Christ in us is the greatest power any believer could ever receive. If we know Him in us, then signs and wonders will follow as a natural flow of Him out of us. By not ‘knowing’, we are stifling the Christ in us. We are actually limiting Him and frustrate His working through us. We are limiting Him in us by our lack of understanding in our minds.

Let me give you an illustration: Our minds are like a pressure valve: A pressure valve reduces the flow of water from the main supply into a house. The valve ‘limits’ the water flow. Our minds can be likened to a pressure valve. Because we do not ‘know’ Christ in us, we have a very limited ‘flow’ of living water from the Living Fount within us. Our minds reduce Him to a ‘trickle’, but in reality, He is a ‘torrent’ waiting to be ‘released’ through us to a lost world.

The more our minds come to ‘know’ Him in us, the stronger He will be able to flow through us. This is when the true power of God, Christ in us, will be revealed to the world. This is the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit. He will teach us Christ in us to us.

Look at these verses on knowing Christ:

Php 3:10 KJV  That I may know him, …..

1Jn 5:20 KJV  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true,

1Co 2:2 KJV  For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

1Co 2:12 KJV  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

2Ti 1:12 KJV  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, ……

Power is knowing Christ in you – this is what Jesus said. , ‘until ye be endued with power from on high’ – Luke 24:49. True ‘power’ can only flow if you know the Christ in you. Why? Because He is The Power

This is why Jesus tells his disciples that they will receive ‘power’ AFTER the Holy Spirit has come upon them:

Act 1:8 KJV  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Why does He say ‘after’? Because the Holy Spirit is The Teacher. He is there to teach us Christ in us! *

When we preach Christ, He is the power of God. Lives will be changed and people will be amazed when Christ is preached. When I say Christ, I do not mean Jesus of Nazareth, I mean the mystery of Christ in us.*

Rom 1:16 KJV  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

1Co 1:24 KJV  But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, ….

If Christ is not preached, there will be no true power – because He is the Power! Very few preachers preach Christ. They preach almost everything else, but not Christ. Paul rebuked the early church in Galatia for this very thing – Gal 1. Our message IS Christ, it is notABOUT Christ’!!!

Php 1:18 KJV  What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; …..

This message of Christ is the power of God unto salvation. When this message is preached, the power of God goes forth and people will come in contact with the real Christ in us.
