Only Christ

Mat 17:1-9 KJV And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, (2) And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. (3) And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. (4) Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. (5) While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. (6) And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. (7) And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. (8) And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. (9) And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

In this account, we see something very significant about Jesus. We see that out of His 12 disciples, He specifically chose only 3 of them, Peter, James and John to accompany Him to the Mountain. Jesus chose these specific 3 men to go with Him on another 2 occasions: Mk 5:27 & Mt 26:37. This is an important thing to remember and you will see why by the end of this post.

We see that Jesus was transfigured in front of His 3 guys – the scripture says that His face shone like the sun and His clothes were white like light. These 3 guys had never seen Jesus like this before, they only knew the natural Jesus – not this supernatural One. This was not the Jesus of Galilee that they knew – this was Jesus the Christ, God’s Son. God was showing us to look and listen to the glorified Christ, not to the fleshly One Jesus of Nazareth. God is showing us who Jesus really is!!!

Then an amazing thing happened: Moses and Elijah ‘appeared’. These 2 were the greatest prophets that had ever lived. Moses brought the Law, and Elijah was a great prophet, if not the greatest prophet in Jewish history. After they appeared, a bright cloud enveloped them all, and God Himself speaks these awesome words: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him”. These words, “hear ye him”, are very important to us born again believers. God is saying that we must leave the old fleshly ministry, and move on to the new glorious spiritual ministry. This is what the following two verses tell us:

Heb 1:1-3 KJV God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, (2) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; (3) Who being the brightness of his glory, ……

1Jn 1:5 KJV This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, ….

God was emphasizing that we must hear Jesus Christ! We must let go of the past old testament and old covenant and embrace the new.

Then we see that Moses and Elijah disappear and Jesus is left standing ALONE in front of His 3 disciples. (8) And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

God was showing the disciples that they must not look to the Law of Moses any longer for guidance and help, and they must not look to Elijah – representing the prophets anymore. We are to look to Jesus only! I am not saying that Jesus is the only person in the Godhead. I am saying that we can only look to Jesus for life – Jn 14:6. There is no life in Moses, and there is no life in the prophets. There is only life in the Son – 1 Jn 5:12 & Jn 5:39-40.

Every believer needs a revelation of the supernatural Jesus – as these 3 disciples got on the Mount. Why? Because we must see and preach Jesus Christ alone. We cannot add the prophets and the Law to Jesus. We cannot add any man made religion and philosophy to Jesus – Col 2:8.

Gal 1:11-12 KJV But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. (12) For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

We cannot add ANYTHING or ANYONE to Christ. All we need is Christ and Christ ALONE!!!!  All we must preach is Christ and Christ ALONE!!

To really see the risen Christ and who He is today, please read the following verses: Rev 4, Rev 5:5-14, Rev 19:11-16 & Rev 21:5-7
