The sword of the spirit

29 09 2011

In this scripture, Paul tells us something not found anywhere else in the Bible, that humans consist of three parts:

1Th 5:23 MKJV  And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Because we are three part beings we need to look at the following very important facts concerning these three different parts.

1. When we are born again, our spirit is joined to Christ and we become one with Him – 1 Cor 1:30. We are perfect in spirit because of this fact.

2. Our souls, which consists of our mind will and emotions, needs to be renewed after we receive salvation. Salvation is a gift from God at the moment of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ – Acts 16:31 and Rom 12:2. The process of our minds being renewed is a process and will continue for all eternity – Php 2:12 and 1 Peter 1:9

3. Our bodies are corrupted and will only be redeemed when Jesus comes back to fetch His bride – 1 Cor 15:52

The writer of Hebrews gives us an awesome verse pertaining to the Word of God and what happens to us when it is preached:

Heb 4:12 MKJV  For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

This scripture tells us that the Word of God divides and separates soul and spirit. It shows us that there is a differentiation between soul and spirit. On the surface, this scripture doesn’t seem to be very important to us, but if you look closer, it has far reaching implications that will greatly influence our Christian walk. If we hear what the Spirit of God is saying to us through this scripture, our lives will be greatly changed for the better!

I believe that Christians are confused about how to understand the Bible because the Word of God is not preached. Old Testament and Law Scriptures and different doctrines are preached everywhere but very rarely is the Word preached!!* Because of this, Christians do not understand who they are as born again believers. Christians will not come to know God to any large degree if the Word is not preached because soul and spirit will not be divided. In fact Christians will struggle to enter into God’s rest and will always strive and “do” because the Bible will make very little sense and will even seem to contradict itself, if the Word of God is not preached.

If we do not know that there is division between soul and spirit, we will live in defeat because we will believe Satan’s lies and condemnation and eventually we will lose heart and could end up giving up hope altogether.

Let me explain what I mean by division of soul and spirit: If I say to you that you stand before God perfect and sinless, would you agree with me or not? You see, your response will depend on if you are looking at yourself as a one part being, meaning your body soul and spirit are all one thing, or if you see yourself as a three part being, with body soul and spirit being divided apart from each other. You stand perfect before God in Spirit. You are not perfect in your soul, because your soul is in the process of being renewed by the Word of God. You are not perfect in your body, because your body is condemned and corruptible and will never be perfect this side of Jesus’ return. Do you see what I am getting to?

We must know where we have been made perfect in Spirit, and we need to know where we need to grow – in our soul. Failure to understand this will cause severe damage to our walk with God. We cannot just lump everything together and say things like “I am just a sinner”. You were a sinner before God placed His Seed in you. But now you are not a sinner. You may commit sins of the flesh, by your body, but you are not a sinner! If we do not separate body, soul and spirit, we will think that when we do sin, we are a sinner. Few Christians understand that they need to separate the three and because of this, preachers not knowing this, preach a mixed gospel, a gospel of law and grace*, because they do not know that soul and spirit will only be divided, if the Word of God is preached. When law and grace is preached, condemnation results.

Religion has combined the soul and spirit together and because there is no differentiation between the two, and confusion results. Christians do not know if they are ‘coming or going’ because they have been kept ignorant of this powerful truth of division of soul and spirit. Let me give you an example of the Word dividing between soul and spirit:

The following scripture is talking about our Spirit

1Jn 5:18 KJV We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

The next scripture is from the same Epistle and if we do not know what part of us this verse is talking about, we will be confused because it sounds like the scriptures are contradicting themselves.

1Jn 1:8 KJV If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

This verse is talking to our soul part. Our souls are in a state of being renewed and yes we will commit sins of the flesh, but we are sinless in Spirit because Christ and our spirit have been joined and are now one 1 Cor 6:17. When God looks at us, He doesn’t see a sinner anymore because we have been crucified with Christ. The life we now live is Christ, Christ in us!

In closing, we are perfect in spirit and we are completely fully grown. There is nothing else God will do in this part of us because His work in us is complete – Col 2:10. In our soul, we need to grow up into Him – Christ in us. Christ does not grow in us, we grow up into Him in our mind – Eph 4:15.

Our bodies express Christ in us through our minds. If our minds are un-renewed, we will express Christ very badly and people will not see Christ in us. We can say that our expression of Christ is not perfect. However, the more our minds are renewed and come in line with the Christ in us, the more perfectly we will express Him who is perfect in us – to the world around us!!!
