Are you failing as a Christian?

24 09 2011

Rev 21:5-7 MKJV And He sitting on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said to me, Write, for these words are true and faithful. (6) And He said to me, It is done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who thirsts I will give of the fountain of the Water of Life freely. (7) He who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son.
*Other verses speaking about the fountain of life: Psa 36:8-9, Psa 68:26, Son 4:15, Jer 2:13, Jer 17:13

This verse is talking about the Fount, Jesus Christ, and He alone is life – John 5:26 & 1 John 5:12.

To explain what I am saying today, I would like to use an example from building construction. When you build a house, the contractor does the plumbing in the building. He lays water pipes throughout the house which bring water to the bathrooms and kitchen. These water pipes are connected to one main water supply point which is provided by the “Water Council” located at the border of the resident’s property.

For those of you who have had to fix a burst water pipe in your home, you will know that when this happened, you had to turn the main water supply off, so that you could work on the broken pipe. When the water supply was opened again, the water flowing out of the taps in the house was contaminated. It contained dirty rusty coloured water which was unfit for consumption. You had to let the water run for a while in order to get clean water coming through the pipes.

Coming to my point today, so many people judge Christian behaviour. I am sure you have heard these words before, “…….and you call yourself a Christian?” The reason people say things like this because they do not understand the process that God is taking each one of His children through. When we are born again, we are made perfect in Spirit as stated by this verse – 1Co 6:17 KJV But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

The growth and change that needs to take place is in our soul, which is in our mind. We need to be changed by the renewing of our minds – Romans 12:2, which takes time. We cannot change overnight unfortunately, and so people think that once you are born again, your reflection of the One in you, Christ, will be perfect instantly! This is not true and many Christians come into “self-condemnation” because they do not understand God’s process of the salvation of the soul – 1 Peter 1:9.

The life which we now live is Christ – Php 1:21. The very life in us is Christ and we are carriers of the Divine Nature – Christ Jesus – 2 Peter 1:4 & Gal 2:20. So what is the problem then? Why do we express Christ in us in such a poor way? Why does the “world” see the bad side of us Christians?

To answer these questions, we need to look at the water pipes example that I used earlier. When we are born again, we are joined to Christ 1 Cor 6:17. For purpose of our illustration, this is like the house water being connected to the Council’s water supply point. This connection of the 2, the Council and the resident, takes place by way of a “union- joint”. A union joint is a plumbing connector that is used to join 2 separate pieces of pipe together. Once properly connected, the 2 separate pipes become one pipe. There is no longer 2 pipes but 1. The union joint has caused 2 to become 1!!!! This is what happens when we are born again. Our life is swallowed up by Christ and we no longer live, but He lives through us- Eph 5:31-32.

Now that we are joined to Christ, His living water flows through us. So if this living water is flowing through us, then why is it coming out contaminated and dirty to the world? The reason is in our soul or mind. Our minds have not been renewed yet and thus our expression of Him in us is not perfect. This causes tremendous anguish and frustration because countless Christians want to express Christ in them perfectly, and yet fail over and over again.

The answer to this dilemma is not a “quick-fix”. It takes a lifetime of learning the Christ in you through the renewing of your mind. The more you come to know Him in you, the more perfectly you will reveal Him to those around you. The longer and stronger the water flows, the cleaner the flow becomes. We cannot expect pure water to flow out of pipes that have stood unused for many years because the pipes would have rusted over this stagnant time, and the water in them, would have become contaminated by the rust. The water is not the problem, the pipes are – Jn 15:1-5.

We cannot expect pure water to flow through us when we have been stagnant for years and years. We will not express Christ perfectly at first, but in time our expression of Him will become purer and purer.

What we can do is to take heart, because we are just the pipes delivering crystal pure water from the Source of Life – the Living Fountain Jesus Christ, who lives in us.
