Does sin send me to hell?

16 09 2011

This message is a life changing one in the sense of our view of evangelism. I grew up in a home where I was taught that I had to “be good” and “do good” in order to be in right standing with my parents. This was acceptable in their eyes. This belief carried forward in my mind to my adult life, where by my understanding a person had to “be good” and “do good” at least 51% of the time in order to be a “good person”.

This is also what I gleaned from Christianity, where I was taught that doing bad things, which the church called sin, was bad, and doing good things, which was being soft and gentle and the like, was good and pleasing to God. I was not a church member and hardly ever went to church, but I picked up somehow that if I did bad things, I would be sent to hell when I died. This was the extent of my religious belief system.

Then God saved me in a wonderful experience, and I began to “learn” Christianity. I was taught that if we sinned we would go to hell. This scared me because no matter how hard I tried, I still sinned. I was in a predicament and began to lose interest in Christianity because I just couldn’t “make the grade”. I kept on sinning, and as far as the church preached, was on the way to hell.

Then after many years, the Lord revealed a powerful truth to me. He showed me that committing sin, does not send you to hell. Sinful actions do not keep you out of Heaven!!! He also showed me that living a “sinless” life and doing good, was not a ticket into heaven either!!!

This is what I’ve seen. Religion preaches that if you sin you will go to hell. People have this idea that being a “good” Christian is very difficult, because you have to stop sinning. In the world’s eyes, a good Christian is someone who doesn’t sin.

What does the Bible show us about this subject of sin………

1Jn 5:16-17 GW If you see another believer committing a sin that doesn’t lead to death, you should pray that God would give that person life. This is true for those who commit sins that don’t lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. ……

Firstly this scripture says that there are sin’s that don’t lead to death. These sins do not send us to hell. Then it says that there is a sin that leads to death. This sin is what Romans 5 talks about, it is the sinful nature that we receive from Adam. Adam’s sin leads to damnation, and Romans says that all have sinned – meaning we are all born with this sinful nature inherited from Satan.

Rom 3:23 MKJV for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,

This means that all are born with a sinful nature, caused by Adam’s original sin. This is where the term “sinner” comes from. A sinner is someone with a sinful nature in them. This scripture means the original sin, because if all have sinned, that means every single person, so if this is the case, what sin has a new born baby committed? Obviously a new born baby cannot sin, so it must mean “original sin” – meaning the sinful nature.

All sinners are condemned to hell, not because of what they have done wrong on earth, not because they have sinned, but because of who they are – “sinners”. This is very important for us to grasp, because we need to preach the gospel accurately because people are going to hell every day because they have not known their need for a Saviour from this sinful state, which they inherited from Adam their forefather. People do not receive Jesus as Lord, because they have been taught that they go to hell because of committing sin. This causes a major belief problem because people then think that if they “do” more good than bad, they will go to heaven and be saved from hell. This is a lie, and they believe it because they have not been taught the gospel truth, which is “sin doesn’t condemn us, not believing on Jesus Christ does”!!!!!!!

Joh 3:15-19 MKJV so that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (16) For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (17) For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. (18) He who believes on Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. (19) And this is the condemnation, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil.

It is clear isn’t it? We are condemned not because of sinful actions, but because of not believing in Jesus Christ. On the other hand, as a sinner, we do not go to Heaven because we do good!!! Even if we “do good” all of the time and never fail at it, we will not go to heaven because of the sinful nature inside of us.

Isa 64:6 KJV  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;…

We are condemned because Adam sinned and death came to us because of him. We stand guilty before God with a sinful nature. Not a single person ever born, apart from Jesus of Nazareth, has not received this sinful nature at conception, and because of this, every single person, is a sinner in God’s eyes!!!

Please read this and listen to the Holy Spirit reveal this deep truth to you:

Rom 5:12-21 KJV   (12)  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  (13)  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  (14)  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.  (15)  But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  (16)  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.  (17)  For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)  (18)  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.  (19)  For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.  (20)  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:  (21)  That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now tell me, in the light of this, are we in need of a Saviour?

Religion has preached a gospel that focuses on the fruit, which is sin. Religion tells us that we must not do this, and not do that, so that we will not go to hell.  Jesus Christ focuses on the root of the problem, which is the sinful nature, which makes a sinner. This sinful nature causes us to sin. This is why Jesus said this:

Joh 8:44 MKJV  You are of the Devil as father, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and did not abide in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

This sinful nature needs to be removed, and the only way that can happen is by God placing His Seed, His Nature, inside of us. So how does this happen? How can I be saved? I know I need a Saviour from this sinful nature inside of me. I know that I am a sinner. I know that it isn’t what I have done that has made me a sinner, I know that I am a sinner because I was born a sinner. I have inherited this nature from Adam, and I desperately need to be saved…..

Act 16:29-31 MKJV  Then asking for a light he rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.  (30)  And leading them outside, he said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?  (31)  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved, and your household.

Note: I do not advocate sinning in any way. I believe as Paul said in Romans 6:1-12
