Enemy of the Cross?

13 09 2011

I want to say here that nothing a man can do will “persuade or influence” God to accept him. Man’s effort does not give salvation of any kind. Modern religion focuses on what man can do to improve himself, instead of the fact of what God has done through Jesus Christ on the Cross. This is called “self righteousness”.
We must be careful not to fall into the trap of self-righteousness, or to focus on what man needs to do in order to be in right standing with God.

Isa 64:6 KJV But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; ……

If we think that we can add to the finished work of Jesus on the cross, we are enemies of the cross.

Php 3:17-18 MKJV Brothers, be imitators together of me, and mark those who walk this way, for you have us for a pattern. (18) (For many are walking, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, as the enemies of the cross of Christ;

Let’s look at one aspect of the cross that is completed because of Christ’s finished work: Because we are placed in Christ through the work of the cross, we are righteous because of Christ. Righteousness is a person, Christ.

1Co 1:30 KJV But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, ……

We stand before God righteous. How? Through the cross.

God’s grace is so sufficient and is based completely on the finished work of the Cross of Calvary.

John 19: (28) After this, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, I thirst. (29) Then a vessel full of vinegar was set. And they filled a sponge with sour wine and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth. (30) Then when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And He bowed His head and gave up the spirit.

When we see how Christ suffered, blood coming out of the wounds on His back, a thorn pierced brow and a spear pierced side, we are reminded of our sin. Christ took our punishment on the cross. Anyone who attempt by human effort to make the human a better person are enemies of the cross.

To think that modern religion has created many ways and methods to save humanity aside from the Cross of Calvary is humanity’s greatest reproach towards God. Paul says anyone who adds or detracts from the finished work of Christ is an enemy of the cross.
