Religion causes obesity….

18 08 2011

The world around us may be getting smaller and smaller, but many many people are getting larger and larger. It is common knowledge that diets loaded with fast-foods contribute to this worldwide phenomenon. Too much sugar and processed junk foods eaten regularly contribute greatly to an “obese society” whose appetite for a quick-fix in a meal is growing daily. There are shocking figures stating that obesity is becoming more and more prevalent in most societies. Obesity can cause lethargy, sickness and disease, poor mental development, lower work rates and many other negative attributes. Obese people often suffer with a poor self-image and struggle with rejection and rarely excel in life.

So what has religion to do with obesity? Religion has adapted and evolved in order to stay relevant. It’s sermons suit it’s audience. The message has become user friendly. The whole “program” is geared to please and to make the audience comfortable. From the comfortable chairs to the excellent skilled musicians, we aim to please. The messages are soft on the ears of the hearers, completely sugar coated. They have very little spiritual nutritional value, if any at all. They minister to the flesh and the desires thereof. Prophesies conjure up imaginations of greatness and feed the flesh once more. Promised blessings are swallowed up and enjoyed in anticipation. From one Sunday service to the next, a range of tasty appetizers in the form of empty traditions are served and are gulped down without so much of a blink of an eyelid. A buffet of main courses are handed out in the form of philosophy and people gorge themselves until they cannot move. Their addiction for a quick-fix is controlling their very being.

They are so overfed with fleshly doctrine, that they cannot see that they have a major spiritual health problem. Their temple of their bodies is at breaking point. This is what Paul warned us about:

Col 2:8 KJV Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

We cannot continue to eat spiritual junk food in copious amounts and expect our spiritual bodies to be healthy. No wonder so many Christians have fallen off the bus! Could it be their diet? Are they just eating whatever is put in front of them without raising conscience? Because if we continue at this rate, eating spiritual meals devoid of nutrition, we shall surely get very sick, and eventually die.

Joh 6:32-35 MKJV Then Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses did not give you that bread from Heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from Heaven. (33) For the bread of God is He who comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world. (34) Then they said to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. (35) And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes on Me shall never thirst.

We see clearly here what we are supposed to be eating. Jesus Christ the bread, our true spiritual food.

Joh 6:48-51 MKJV I am the Bread of life. (49) Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died. (50) This is the Bread which comes down from Heaven, so that a man may eat of it and not die. (51) I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he shall live forever. And truly the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

The only life there is for our bodies is in Christ. No other food will have any nutritional value at all. All other food, no matter how well it is prepared, presented, and served will help us. In fact all other food will give us “food poisoning”. We cannot go on eating fast-food from just any fast-food joint! Why? Because our flesh will get puffed up, and eventually our obese flesh will take control of us!!!!

In closing, we need to take responsibility for our own spiritual health. We need to make sure that we are getting the pure Word, Christ Jesus.

1Pe 2:2-8 MKJV desire the sincere milk of the Word, as newborn babes, so that you may grow by it; (3) if truly you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (4) For having been drawn to Him, a living Stone, indeed rejected by men, but elect, precious with God; (5) you also as living stones are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (6) Therefore also it is contained in the Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner Stone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him shall never be ashamed.” (7) Therefore to you who believe is the honor. But to those who are disobedient, He is the Stone which the builders rejected; this One came to be the Head of the corner, (8) and a Stone-of-stumbling and a Rock-of-offense to those disobeying, who stumble at the Word, ……..

If we took as much care about our spiritual diets as we do with our natural diets, we would really be amazed at how AWESOME Jesus really is!! For we shall see Him as He really is….In us……
