God’s real purpose of Pentecost – Part 1

11 08 2011

We are going to show you God’s main reason for the day of “pentecost”. For those of you who don’t know what “pentecost” means, it is the day that Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit, 40 days after His ascension into heaven, hence the word “pentecost” meaning the word forty! The word pentecost is not mentioned as a specific day in the bible. Jesus speaks about this day when He would give the Holy Spirit here:

John 14:16-18 KJV And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

And again here:

Luke 24:49 MKJV And behold, I send the promise of My father on you. But you sit in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.

And this following scripture is the fulfilment of Jesus’ word to His disciples:

Acts 2:1-4 KJV And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This is where Pentecostal churches originate from, the day of Pentecost. Pentecostals concentrate on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit with an emphasis on the person of the Holy Spirit. They beleive that the Holy Spirit empowers themselves to do God’s work. This is alright excepting many many people fail to see Jesus’ main reason why He sent the Holy Spirit to earth in the first place.

Let’s look at what Jesus said to His disciples again when He spoke to them about the day of pentecost:

John 14:16-20 KJV And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (Holy Spirit), that he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. (19) Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. (20) At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

“At that day”. What day was He talking about? The day of Pentecost. What will they know on that day? That they were in Christ and Christ was in them!!!! “….and ye in me, and I in you”. Wow!!!!!!!!

We have been taught that we will receive power etc etc which is true, but the main focus of pentecost and the Holy Spirit is that we will know that we are in Christ and Christ is in us.

We will continue with the subject of the Holy Spirit in part 2.
